Complex Investigation for High-Net-Worth Individual

SITUATION

The personal jewelry of a high-net-worth individual (HNWI) was involved in a heist with an estimated value of US$90 million. A personal assistant to the HNWI gave the jewelry to a man claiming to be a psychic so that the jewelry could be “cleansed.” Instead, the psychic sold the jewelry to a pawn shop in the United States. After being hired by the family office of the HNWI, FTI Cybersecurity worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to assist in the digital forensic investigation and tracking down of the jewelry.

OUR ROLE

FTI Cybersecurity worked alongside the FBI to conduct a digital forensic investigation of laptops, mobile devices, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, and the fraudulent psychic’s website. The team’s forensic work helped advance the FBI’s investigation by extracting valuable and actionable data from CCTV footage and the psychic’s website.

OUR IMPACT

The data uncovered by the team assisted in tracking down leads within the diamond trade. This work helped the FBI find and arrest the psychic, who was charged with mail and wire fraud, and interstate transportation of stolen goods. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison. All items were seized by the FBI, and will be returned to the HNWI.
