The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has finalized a rule to implement Executive Order 14117, aimed at safeguarding sensitive personal and government-related data. To be able to conduct certain “restricted” transactions under the rule, U.S. entities need to have an external auditor certify compliance with security requirements developed by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. We identified the vulnerability in the client’s system and implemented initial containment measures. Further investigation uncovered a bot that bypassed remediation efforts. We assessed the full scope of fraudulent activity and developed a mitigation strategy. The investigation also revealed the threat actor’s identity, facilitating effective communication with law enforcement.
